Carbon Story
A young wood with mixed native species can lock up more than 400 tonnes of carbon per hectare in trees, roots and soil. They also help to prevent flooding, reduce temperatures in cities, reduce pollution and keep the soil nutrient rich. Just 13 % of the UK’s land area is currently covered by trees (compared to 37% in Europe) so we need more woodlands and we need to look after the ones we already have! The Government have a target to reach 19% of our land into woodlands by 2050 which is a additional 1.5 million hectares (the size of Yorkshire!) of woodland.
